Guitarist Tom Morello goes solo

NEW YORK, April 22 (UPI) -- Audioslave/Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello took an unusual road in New York while getting ready for the release of his new solo album.

Morello sings as The Nightwatchman in "One Man Revolution," which arrives Tuesday, the New York Post reported.

While most musicians see an open-mic night as a necessary step to becoming famous, Morello decided to use the free stage time to hone his singing skills.

"I'd come off these big arena tours and play in front of eight people and a latte machine," said Morello. "It was terrifying, because it was the first time I had really sung.

"I'd played thousands of shows as an electric guitar player but zero shows as a singer, so a new set of challenges came up, like remembering the words."

Morello began his acoustic songwriting five years ago and since then has dropped in anywhere to try them out.

Also it was a good thing he sought independence because shortly after the announcement that Rage would reunite at the Coachella music festival, another statement was issued saying that Audioslave would no longer exist.
