Diana's eulogy inspired by her fans

LONDON, April 21 (UPI) -- The brother of Princess Diana said the eulogy he read at her funeral included the sentiments of her many fans and wasn't a dig at Britain's royal family.

In an article in The Guardian, Charles Spencer said he had awoken at 4 a.m. one morning before the service and realized he would be speaking not only for the Spencer family but for the beloved Diana's global fan base.

Diana's September 1997 funeral was televised around the world and raised eyebrows when Spencer said in his eulogy that his sister's "blood family" would do its best to protect her two sons, the princes William and Harry, from "an unhappy upbringing" and constant hounding by the media.

Spencer wrote in the London newspaper that those notions were a common theme in the letters he received from Diana's admirers, although it was seen by some observers as a jab at his former brother-in-law and the rest of the royals.
