Orchestra executive joins London sinfonia

ST. PAUL, Minn., April 18 (UPI) -- The City of London Sinfonia has tabbed a British-born vice president of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in Minnesota to be its next chief executive.

Barry Kempton, who leaves May 1, joined the Chamber Orchestra as general manager in 1995 after spending nine years with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune said Tuesday. His latest position with the orchestra is vice president for artistic planning.

The City of London Sinfonia was founded in 1971 by its music director, Richard Hickox.

"During his time at the SPCO ... Barry has brought grace, charm, knowledge, friendliness and commitment to his work," said Bruce Coppock, orchestra president and managing director.

A national search for Kempton's replacement will begin soon, Coppock said.
