Bolles comes out clean on drug charge

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 17 (UPI) -- Punk rock drummer Don Bolles didn't have a date-rape drug on him when arrested in California this month, just soap.

Bolles was stopped by Newport Beach police on April 4 for a broken taillight on his 1968 van and then was jailed for three days when officers suspected a bottle of liquid they found contained the drug GHB.

Subsequent tests by the Orange County Sheriff's Department crime lab determined it was just a bottle of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap. A spokeswoman for the county district attorney's office said Monday all charges against the 50-year-old former member of Germs will be dismissed, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Bolles said he and his girlfriend, musician Cat Scandal, were going to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting when he was pulled over. He said he is never without a bottle of the organic soap because it helps keep his skin youthful.

The company said it has found field test kits can mistakenly register positive for GHB when testing liquid soaps.

"Police departments nationwide should immediately stop using the ODV field test for GHB," Bronner's President David Bronner said.
