NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., April 14 (UPI) -- The inspiration for the film "Jerry Maguire," sports agent Leigh Steinberg, has been arrested in California and charged with drunken driving.
Lt. Craig Fox of the Newport Beach, Calif., police, said Steinberg was arrested early Friday after slamming his vehicle into three parked cars near the Balboa Bay Club, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. Steinberg, 58, was found to be intoxicated and was released later Friday morning, police said.
"As I have tried to demonstrate through the years, I have always believed in role-modeling and community responsibility. But last night, I made a serious error in judgment and I am very sorry for my actions," he said in a statement.
Steinberg also was arrested for drunken driving in 1996 after rear-ending a vehicle. He was eventually sentenced to community service for that offense.
During his career he has represented many superstar athletes, including Steve Young and Troy Aikman.
