Shatner shows off video calling

TORONTO, April 3 (UPI) -- The screen isn't as large as the one on the USS Enterprise, but "Star Trek's" William Shatner helped launch a cell phone video calling service in Toronto.

The service is part of a wireless product line for Rogers Inc., which include other bells and whistles, such as XM satellite radio and a weekly update of the 50 most popular clips on YouTube, the Toronto Globe and Mail said Tuesday.

Shatner and John Boynton, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Rogers Wireless, made the first mobile video call in North America during the official launch of Rogers Vision. So far Rogers is the only wireless carrier in North America to offer video calling.

"I never thought that video would come out of science fiction, not science fact," Shatner said. "It's incredible."

There are a couple of caveats. The service works only with a specific cell phone. And the calling area certainly isn't intergalactic -- it an area stretching from Oshawa to Niagara Falls in Ontario. Plus, it's not cheap at $25 a month for the service, another $15 for radio and YouTube, and another $4 for a video calling plan.
