Alec Baldwin to foot soldier's education

NEEDLES, Ariz., March 30 (UPI) -- Actor Alec Baldwin, moved by the story and photo of a young Arizona woman going off to war, pledged to pay for her education once she returns stateside.

The "30 Rock" star, a Bush administration critic, said Resha Kane of Needles, Ariz., looked too young to be a soldier and reminded him of his own daughter,an assistant manager at a discount store where Kane's mother works, told the Mohave Daily News in Bullhead City, Ariz. The New York Times in early March wrote a story on the girl and the life she was entering when she left for Fort Hood, Texas, and eventually Iraq.

"He read the article, was affected by it and offered to help with her education," said Mike Canright, a family friend. "I believe in his sincerity when he says we can set politics aside to support our troops."

Baldwin offered the family three options, Canright said, send a check, come to Needles for a low-key meeting or come with media in tow. The family settled on the third choice, figuring the story already garnered nationwide attention.
