PALM SPRINGS, Calif., March 26 (UPI) -- More than 15,000 gay women are gathering in Palm Springs, Calif., this week for the start of two competing events.

The Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week and Club Skirts' The Dinah begin on Wednesday, the (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise said Monday. The rival parties came into being after the promotion team for the annual Dinah Shore event split after 2005.

Organizers say the attraction of big-name entertainers to the weeklong festivities could bring attendance approaching that of the city's more well-known gay men's White Party, which is expected to draw about 20,000 attendees in early April.

Celebrity performers at the Dinah Shore parties include actress Carmen Electra, singer India.Arie, Lucy Lawless of "Xena: Warrior Princess," comedian Sandra Bernhard and various TV actors.

"Getting really big names, that didn't really start till last year," said Sandy Sachs, co-founder of Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week.

Mariah Hanson, owner of Club Skirts and Dinah Shore founder, said the gathering really took off two years ago after it was featured on Showtime's "The L Word."
