Guitarist leads all-star SXSW jam

AUSTIN, Texas, March 16 (UPI) -- An all-star rock 'n' roll jam marked the second day of the South By Southwest Music and Media Conference in Texas.

What was supposed to be a solo acoustic performance late Thursday night by Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello, in his protest singer guise as alter ego The Nightwatchman, became a plugged-in affair thanks to the presence of several friends. Guns N'Roses/Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash, Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and Primus leader Les Claypool all joined Morello on stage at a called The Parish.

The ensemble played songs by their various bands, including the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams," Rage Against the Machines' "Guerilla Radio," the Jane's Addiction favorite "The Mountain" and several songs from Morello's first Nightwatchman album, "One Man Revolution," which comes out April 24.

Noting the ramshackle, improvised nature of the show, Morello told the crowd that "you not only hear music being played, you get to hear music being made."
