Panel passes on the 'Jerry Orbach Corner'

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- A New York panel delivered a "Law & Order" twist akin to a hung jury on naming a street corner for the late Jerry Orbach, the series' Detective Lennie Briscoe.

The Community Board 5 voted 18-17 with one abstention in favor of renaming the 53rd Street and Eighth Avenue intersection the Jerry Orbach Corner, the New York Times said Friday.

The vote didn't constitute a majority, hence the hung jury.

"Technically, we are on the record as not taking a position," Chairman David Diamond told an assembly of interested parties including Orbach's widow, Elaine, a son and actor Sam Waterson, who plays prosecutor Jack McCoy on the series.

Elaine Orbach now moves across the street -- literally -- to Community Board 4, which has jurisdiction on the west side of Eighth Avenue.

A community board's decision is advisory; the City Council ultimately decides street renaming requests.

The stage and screen actor, who died in December 2004, was a familiar face in the neighborhood for decades, living with his family in an apartment on 53rd Street for more than 25 years.

After the vote, Elaine Orbach said, "As Jerry would say, onwards and sideways."
