Desai's 'Inheritance' wins critics' award

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- India-born writer Kiran Desai's "The Inheritance of Loss" won another literary honor -- the National Book Critics Circle fiction prize awarded in New York.

The book also won a Man Booker winner for literary excellence, the Book Standard said Friday.

Other NBCC winners Thursday were:

-- "Rough Crossings: Britain, the Slaves and the American Revolution," by Simon Schama, nonfiction.

-- "James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon," Julie Phillips, biography.

-- "The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million," Daniel Mendelsohn , memoir/autobiography.

-- "Tom Thomson in Purgatory," Troy Jollimore, poetry.

-- "Everything That Rises: A Book of Convergences," Lawrence Weschler, criticism.
