Blues Traveler singer arrested for pot

RITZVILLE, Wash., March 8 (UPI) -- Blues Traveler singer John Popper was cited for marijuana possession after Washington state troopers pulled over the SUV in which he was riding.

The vehicle was registered to Popper, but his buddy, Brian Gourgeois, apparently was behind the wheel Tuesday afternoon and got the reckless driving ticket for allegedly doing 111 mph on Interstate 90 near Ritzville, Wash., KHQ-TV in Spokane, Wash., reported Wednesday.

Both were released on their own recognizance after being booked at the Adams County Jail on the misdemeanor counts.

Officers said they arrested Popper, 39, of Snohomish, Wash., and Gourgeois, 34, of Austin, Texas, after allegedly smelling the odor of marijuana coming from the SUV and finding a small amount of pot and a marijuana pipe.

Using a trained dog, authorities then discovered several hidden compartments where they found 14 weapons, a switchblade knife, a stun gun and night vision goggles. The vehicle also was equipped with flashing emergency lights, a siren and public address equipment.

Popper allegedly told authorities he was a gun collector and that he had the emergency equipment installed because, in the event of a natural disaster, "he didn't want to be left behind," KHQ said.
