Orbach recognition may take a while

NEW YORK, March 7 (UPI) -- The widow of noted stage and television actor Jerry Orbach is trying to get the New York street corner where they lived for 25 years named after him.

Elaine Orbach plans to bring his 96-year-old mother and a son Thursday when she goes before Community Board 5, an organization that rarely conveys such laurels for fear of cluttering the neighborhood, The New York Times said.

"It's no reflection of the person that is to be honored," said district manager Gary Parker. "It's a concern about keeping the cityscape as clean and clear as possible."

Orbach is counting on more than her late husband's stature as a Tony Award-nominated actor and wise-cracking homicide detective Lennie Briscoe on TV's "Law & Order."

"This was his neighborhood," she said. "They must know who he is and who he was and how much he loved this city."

If Board 5 rejects her request for a sign at 53rd Street and Eighth Avenue, she has a Plan B: Board 4 governs the western side of the intersection.

And she could go to the City Council, which can override the local boards.
