Stooges waited until new album felt right

MIAMI, March 6 (UPI) -- Veteran rockers the Stooges took their time making "The Weirdness," the Michigan-formed band's first set of new material in 34 years.

The Stooges initially regrouped in 2003 and recorded four songs for front man Iggy Pop's solo album, "Skull Ring." But Pop said he and brothers Ron and Scott Asheton didn't want to hurry their own record.

"We just kinda shrugged and went through the process we go through until we felt we had a real band and the stuff was the best we could do," Pop said, though he added that "at a certain point we knew we had to ... get off the pot. It was like, 'Dudes, we've been writing for three years. We gotta make a record now or die!'"

The Stooges last album before "The Weirdness" was "Raw Power" in 1973.

The band will be on tour throughout the year, including March 17 at the South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.
