Inquest into Diana's death pushed back

LONDON, March 6 (UPI) -- An inquest into the death of Princess Diana has been pushed back until October.

Anne Elizabeth Oldfield Butler-Sloss, deputy royal coroner conducting the inquest, Tuesday adjourned the main hearing "to on or about" Oct. 1, The Telegraph said.

Lawyers representing Mohamed Al Fayed, father of the princess' companion, Dodi, who also died, wanted the inquest postponed because of the "massive amount of work" to prepare for the probe into the crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris in 1997.

The inquest's possible scope was outlined at a hearing Monday among Butler-Sloss and lawyers representing different parties. Butler-Sloss said the inquest likely would investigate Diana's alleged fears for life, a suggestion that she was pregnant, the embalming of her body and its purpose; and the younger Fayed having a ring.

Other areas of investigation may be the identity of the driver of an unidentified Fiat, any cars that may have blocked the route of the princess' vehicle and the possible operation of a strobe light.

Fayed has claimed the couple were assassinated as part of an "Establishment" plot and wants to call Prince Charles and Prince Philip as witnesses.
