Court blocks BBC peerage scandal broadcast

LONDON, March 3 (UPI) -- A British court has granted an injunction blocking the BBC from broadcasting a story on money allegedly paid to politicians in exchange for noble titles.

The Daily Mail reported Saturday that the unprecedented move came after a request from the Metropolitan Police in London to prevent the publication of information on the system of "cash for honors."

The Mail said the injunction suggested that the police have evidence they want kept out of the public domain and that criminal charges could be in the works.

In dramatic fashion, the injunction was granted just one hour before BBC1 had planned to broadcast the story on the "Ten O'Clock News" program.

There has been an on-going inquiry for a year into accusations that peerages were offered by political parties in return for financial support during the 2005 general election.

The injunction follows months of mutual accusations between the British government and the police over the leaking of information to the media.
