Fox quiz show's success elementary

LOS ANGELES, March 2 (UPI) -- You just might be a fifth grader if you thought Fox's game show "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" would strike a cord with U.S. television viewers.

The quiz show hosted by "Blue Collar" comic Jeff Foxworthy, pulled such impressive numbers on its first two nights that Fox ordered more episodes, the Chicago Tribune said.

But with "American Idol" as a lead-in and a $1 million top prize along with Foxworthy as host, even a fourth grader would have known the network had a hit.

Its premiere episode Tuesday drew 26.5 million viewers, Fox's highest-rated series premiere in 13 years. Its second episode on Wednesday attracted 23.4 million.

The first question to the first contestant on the show's premiere stumped the UCLA graduate who thought Columbus Day was in September.

The show's questions are culled from elementary school textbooks.

Columbus Day is in October.
