BAHAI, Chad, March 1 (UPI) -- Actress Angelina Jolie recently ended a two-day mission to a refugee camp in Chad, where she visited with refugees from neighboring Sudan's Darfur region.
A U.S. High Commission for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie traveled through a sandstorm to reach the Oure-Cassoni camp near Bahai. She said she was struck by the sense of hope and the desire that peacekeeping forces be deployed in Chad, the commission said in a release.
Jolie visited schools, talking to African women and children about returning to their homeland and life at the camp that houses more than 26,000 people.
The refugees were comforted by reports saying that the International Criminal Court had told the U.N. Security Council it had credible evidence of grave crimes against humanity committed in Darfur, Jolie said.
"Today, many refugees seemed to have a new sense of hope, and they want to see those guilty brought to trial," Jolie said, adding that knowing their attackers were "stripped of their weapons" would help the refugees feel safe enough to return to Darfur.
In an opinion piece published Wednesday in the Washington Post, Jolie wrote a child told her, "We want a trial."
