AREZZO, Italy, March 1 (UPI) -- Organizers of a major Piero della Francesca show in Italy made a startling discovery -- the artist's first painting was part of a private collection in Chile.
The exhibit's organizers located the painting when they searched the world to put on display the most extensive selection of the Renaissance master's work they could find, ANSA said.
The oil on wood, a Madonna and child, disappeared about 50 years ago, shortly after it was authenticated.
The exhibit's organizers say the work, while being part of the artist's youth, showed "significant" signs of his ground-breaking use of perspective.
The Piero show brings together Piero's masterpieces for the first time.
A recently discovered treatise on Archimedes, annotated by the artist with geometrical jottings in the margins, also will be on display.
