Filming in nature reserves has scrutinized since director Chen Kaige's "The Promise" was fined $11,250 for littering and destroying vegetation in Shangri La in 2004.

The regulations were introduced in December but are only now being publicized, Variety said. Some limited filming and performances will be allowed in "experimental zones" as well as the outer areas of scenic some cultural heritage sites, as long as the government approves the sets and stages.

About 15 percent of China is covered by nature reserves.
