LOS ANGELES, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up," from the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won the Oscar for best song Sunday at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

"I have to thank Al Gore for inspiring us," Etheridge said, "for showing that caring about the Earth is not Republican or Democrat, it's not red or blue, it's green."

The music of Gustavo Santaolalla in "Babel" earned the Oscar for original score.

"I believe in our soul rests our true identity," Santaolalla in accepting the award.

He said he was proud to work on "Babel" because it helps people to better understand themselves and how they fit in the global community.
