Hugh Grant could be 'Dr. Who' bad guy

LONDON, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Hollywood actor Hugh Grant, known for his befuddled-but-basically-good-guy roles, is scheduled to play a bad guy on the British series "Doctor Who."

Grant, 46, had an opportunity two years ago to play the lead character in the series but turned it down because he didn't think the show would be a hit, the (Britain) Sun said Thursday.

"Doctor Who" begins its third season this spring. Grant, star of "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Notting Hill," said he is in talks about appearing next season.

Now apparently joining evildoers such as the Daleks, Cybermen and Dalek leader Davros, Grant said he was in discussions about a one-time role.

"I'd prefer to be a baddie, they're more fun," Grant said.
