City to preserve real Coronation Street

SALFORD, England, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Coronation Street in Salford, which inspired the like-named British TV drama, and the Salford Lads Club soon will be protected areas, the city council said.

The New Barracks estate, where Coronation Street and the club are located, was built in the early 1900s and was Salford City Council's first local authority housing scheme, the BBC said. The authority now wants to protect the area, saying it has "maintained much of its original architectural appearance and character."

A formal conservation plan will go out for bid later this year.

Salford Lads Club, at one end of Coronation Street, has seen a stream of music fans visit after the building was featured on the inside cover of the Smiths' album "The Queen is Dead." The club's owners said they want to raise about $2 million for building repairs.

New Barracks estate was designed by Henry Lord, the architect who designed former Salford Royal Hospital and the Salford Museum and Art Gallery.
