Turner Broadcasting accepts blame for hoax

BOSTON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- The Turner Broadcasting System accepted responsibility for the marketing campaign that caused a panic in Boston over a possible bomb threat.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said TBS agreed to pay the cost of massive effort to deal with what authorities believed was a potential bomb plot, the Boston Globe said Friday.

Two people were arrested in connection with the incident.

Costs are expected to exceed $500,000 in Boston and approach $500,000 for the area's transit system, and the cities of Cambridge and Somerville.

"We have no intention of shirking the responsibility onto any other company," said TBS spokeswoman Shirley Powell. "We are taking full responsibility for this."

Powell said the Atlanta-based network accepted the blame for the scare created by the campaign for the late-night cartoon "Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

In a full-page ad appearing in the Boston Globe Friday, TBS apologized to Bostonians. "We never intended this outcome and certainly did not set out to perpetrate a hoax," the open letter said. "What we did is inadvertently cause a great American city to deal with the unintended impact of this marketing campaign. For this, we are deeply sorry."
