Sex-ed show taking Arab world by storm

CAIRO, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- An Egyptian doctor, the Arab world's first Muslim sexologist, dispenses sexual advice from an Islamic perspective on a barrier-breaking sex-ed TV show.

Heba Kotb, 39, who runs a sex clinic in Cairo, devotes "Serious Talk" to answering intimate sexual questions asked by Arab men and women. The topics such as impotence or the female orgasm -- usually avoided within conservative Arab societies -- are discussed within an Islamic perspective, the Sunday Times of London said.

Kotb, with a degree in clinical sexology, said she invites clerics and doctors to participate in the show's discussions. For instance, she said she found parallels the Koran regarding references to sex and discoveries about the female orgasm by the researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson.

Critics said the program, broadcast weekly on an independent Egyptian satellite channel, is too explicit. Sheikh Youssef al-Badri, a radical Islamic cleric, said the show "invades the privacy of our bedrooms" and "increases the number of sex perverts."
