Seminar covers business of movies

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A Hollywood studio executive, a director and a U.S. senator will debate the movie business and its economic impact in a symposium in Washington.

The daylong "Business of Show Business" symposium, scheduled for Feb. 6, will provide a forum for the movie industry, lawmakers, students and others to discuss the business of movie-making, the Motion Picture Association of America, the program's sponsor, said in a news release.

"The American motion picture industry is a world leader precisely because we have an environment that encourages creativity and risk-taking," said Dan Glickman, MPAA chairman and Chief executive officer.

One session will take up intellectual property rights and how they contribute to the creative process. Scheduled speakers include Warner Bros. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Barry Meyer, Directors Guild of America President Michael Apted and Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
