LAS VEGAS, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Casino operator Steve Wynn is betting that "Monty Python's Spamalot" has the legs to last in Las Vegas.
After several Broadway musical productions failed to connect with Strip visitors, another poor-performing show could mark the end of Broadway in Vegas for the remainder of the decade, the Las Vegas Review-Journal said.
But John O'Hurley proclaimed, "The theater is alive and well!" after emerging from a giant can of Spam at a joke-filled media event promoting "Spamalot," the Broadway opening at Wynn Las Vegas in March.
Taking on the argument that maybe Vegas isn't right for musicals, Wynn said jokingly, "We looked for the perfect piece of material to put a final chapter on theater in Las Vegas. This is the end."
"Spamalot" earned $100 million on Broadway and its national tour is setting house records across the country.
Casting O'Hurley as King Arthur gives the Las Vegas edition an edge. The national tour of "Spamalot" doesn't have famous names. O'Hurley is known from his stints on "Seinfeld" and "Dancing With the Stars."
"I'm lucky enough to have a mainstream type of career," O'Hurley said.
