BALTIMORE, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Irish rocker and activist Bono will receive the NAACP Chairman's Award, NAACP board chairman Julian Bond said in Baltimore.

Bond said the U2 front man has inspired people worldwide with his music and humanitarian efforts, Variety said Tuesday.

In 2006, Bono helped launch Product, an organization dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS crisis in Africa. He was one of Time magazine's Persons of the Year in 2005 and will be awarded an honorary British knighthood later this year.

Bono will be presented with his award during the NAACP Image Awards in March.
