Somers: Friends 'thoughtful' after fire

MALIBU, Calif., Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Actress Suzanne Somers said people were "unbelievably kind" in the aftermath of losing her Malibu, Calif., home to wildfires earlier this month.

Somers discussed how she coped with the loss of her home, saying, "I just kept looking at these ashes thinking nobody died, we didn't die, we should have died," in an interview with "Access Hollywood" that aired Monday.

She said she left the house about 2 1/2 hours before.

Somers added that many of her celebrity friends have reached out to her to help.

"People have been so unbelievably kind and thoughtful," she said.

Actress Jackie Collins gave her a necklace because Somers' jewelry was destroyed. Singer Barry Manilow took her to Madison Square Garden. Comics and talk show hosts Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres called.

"I don't have anything left, but it was the gesture, it is just so beautiful," she said.

And then there was the man in a restaurant who wouldn't let her pay for her soup.
