LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- "Dreamgirls," the musical about a Motown girl group, was named best motion picture-comedy or musical in the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles.
"I feel lucky; I feel grateful," said producer Laurence Mark. He said "Dreamgirls" wasn't meant to be turned from successful Broadway musical to a movie until 23 years went by so "these stars could align" and make the picture what it was.
Sacha Baron Cohen won the award for best performance by an actor in a comedy or musical for his lead role in "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan."
"Thank you to every American who has not sued me so far," he said during his acceptance speech.
Portraying the hellish fashion boss in "The Devil Wears Prada" earned best performance by an actress honors for Meryl Streep.
"This has been such a fun year to watch movies," she said. "It makes you want to cry with gratitude -- until next year."
Streep also thanked those responsible for allowing costumes from "Prada" to be donated to various charities.
