LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Hollywood has seen numerous failed attempts over three decades to bring Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" to the big screen, but the latest attempt looks promising.
The late author had script approval for adaptations of her 1957 novel and used it judiciously, but there appears to be little in the way of the most recent effort -- possibly starring Angelina Jolie -- The New York Times reported.
The best-selling novel focuses on a future in which all creative and innovative Americans suddenly disappear in protest of a collectivist culture.
Lions Gate Entertainment is developing the project, with plans calling for Jolie to star as the lead character, Dagny Taggart. The 1,200-page book is being adapted by "Braveheart" screenwriter Randall Wallace.
"I have two hours (of screen time) to try to express what Rand believed to an audience, and my responsibility is not only to Ayn Rand, but to the audience, that this be a compelling movie," Wallace told the Times. "More people will see the movie than will read 'Atlas Shrugged.' And the movie has to work."
