Retiring academic gets a Vulcan sendoff

DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Wright State University President Kim Goldenberg, an avid "Trekkie," was beaming when Leonard "Mr. Spock" Nimoy crashed his retirement party in Dayton, Ohio.

Nimoy flashed the Vulcan "live long and prosper" hand sign to the delight of about 200 people attending the party at the Dayton Art Institute Thursday night, the Dayton Daily News reported.

Goldenberg, 59, worked on NASA's first manned moon landing as a test engineer for Grumman Aerospace Corp.

He has spent 24 years at Wright State and is retiring after nine years as its president at the end of the month to return to teaching in the medical school.

In addition to the space connection, Goldenberg said he and his wife appreciate the messages contained in each episode of "Star Trek."

"'Star Trek' is still, today, way ahead of its time," he said. "The shows' lessons about what you do when you encounter another culture apply especially today."
