Golden Globes attendees get fewer gifts

NEW YORK, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- New tax laws have prevented the Hollywood Foreign Press Association from supplying expensive gift boxes at this year's Golden Globe Awards.

But that doesn't mean that the presenters and nominees won't have plenty of freebies to pick up during the show, including Fendi Sunglasses and a trip to French Polynesia, USA Today reported Friday.

The IRS announced that the press association had to pay back taxes on gift baskets given out in 2004 and 2005.

"I didn't think it was fair to ask stars to pay for something they received three years ago, so we were happy to do it. But, the truth is, it became a burden for us," said HFPA president Philip Berk.

All audience members and presenters at the 2007 Golden Globes will receive the same gift bag worth less than $500.

"I've been acting for 20 years now," joked Greg Grunberg of NBC's "Heroes." "Of course, the year a show I'm on is nominated, Uncle Sam decides to start handing out traffic tickets."
