Gary Glitter could be released early

THU DUC, Vietnam, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Rock singer Gary Glitter may be released early from a three-year sentence he received in March 2006 for molesting two girls in Thailand.

Glitter, 62, whose real name is Paul Gadd, may have time taken off of his sentence for good behavior, a measure that could free him as early as May.

Officials at the Thu Duc detention center where Glitter is serving his sentence told Sky News that his name is on a list of prisoners recommended for early release. The list was selected by Glitter's fellow inmates, nearly all of whom voted to release him early.

Vietnam traditionally reduces the terms of inmates who have exhibited good behavior during the Lunar New Year celebrations, which are scheduled next month. Glitter will likely be deported immediately, Sky News reported.

Glitter was caught with a 4,000-picture collection of child pornography in England in 1999. He served a four-month jail sentence in Britain before moving to Vietnam.
