Patti Smith ready for Rock Hall of Fame

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Patti Smith's impending Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in New York brings warm memories of her late husband.

The singer, songwriter and punk rock pioneer said Monday that former MC5 guitarist Fred Smith, who died of a heart attack in 1994, was hoping she would one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame. "At the end of his life," she recalled, "Fred counseled me when he was ill that if it did happen to be happy about it and feel good about it and not rebellious.

"So I'm certainly happy. I know that Fred is proud, too."

Smith will be inducted on March 12 in a New York City ceremony that will also honor Van Halen, R.E.M., The Ronettes and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. The show will be taped for broadcast later that week on VH1.

Smith is finishing up work on an album of cover songs that will be released later this year.
