LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Hulking character actor and veteran of more than 100 acting credits, Frank Campanella, has died in his home north of Los Angeles at the age of 87.
Campanella died Saturday at his home in Toluca Lake, north of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Daily News reported Wednesday. A cause of death was not given.
The 6-foot-5 actor with a flattened nose played many bad-guy roles, sea captains, cops and judges. Because of his Italian heritage, he helped Robert De Niro with the Sicilian dialog in "The Godfather Part II," and acted in almost all of the films directed by Garry Marshall, the Daily News said.
During World War II he worked as a civilian interpreter, deciphering Italian and Sicilian dialects for the U.S. government, the newspaper said.
His first television role -- that of Mook the Moon Man on the "Captain Video" series in 1949 -- is considered one of his most distinctive efforts.
His funeral is scheduled for Jan. 17, family said.
