James Brown funeral draws thousands

AUGUSTA, Ga., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- More than 8,000 people packed the James Brown Arena in Augusta, Ga., Saturday for the funeral of the late "Godfather of Soul."

Brown's own band played a musical tribute and the crowd watched video of his last performance in Augusta, the town where he grew up.

The family arrived in a half-dozen limousines under police escort shortly after the Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson had entered the arena.

The Augusta Chronicle said the overflow crowd outside the arena cheered when a Brown impersonator arrived and began mingling with them along with the "Cape Man," who was in charge of the trademark cape that would be draped over Brown's shoulders when Brown was on stage.

Brown died of heart failure on Christmas Day. He was 73.

Nick and Jessica sign off on split deal

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Former Hollywood power couple Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have reached an agreement on splitting up their financial assets, a report says.

Celebrity Web site TMZ.com said the pair, who officially divorced last June, agreed that Lachey will get "significantly" more than the $1.5 million that Simpson initially offered, but less than the $18 million he had asked for in the settlement. The pair said they decided to settle between themselves rather than risk an ugly court battle

TMZ said it had obtained the documents filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court that were signed by Simpson and Lachey signaling that their financial dispute was settled.

Simpson and Lachey once peddled a book on secrets to a happy and sexy marriage, and starred in MTV's reality series "Newlyweds."

Rod Stewart among queen's honorees

LONDON, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Rod Stewart and Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter are among the Britons being recognized in the annual New Year Honors.

The various titles are bestowed by the queen to individuals who stand out in various fields.

Stewart is being honored for services to music while Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, is being recognized for her performance as an equestrian competitor, including winning the European championship.

The BBC said other honorees include Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam, actor Johnny Briggs, boxer Ricky Hatton, vacuum cleaner manufacturer James Dyson and John Scarlett, head of the MI6 intelligence agency.

Stinging suit against Connery dismissed

NEW YORK, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A New York judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against actor Sean Connery alleging he was rude and a noisy slob.

State Supreme Court Justice Debra James threw the matter out Friday after the plaintiff failed to rewrite the petition as ordered.

The New York Daily News said Saturday that neighbor Burton Sultan complained that Connery blasted loud music in his Upper East Side apartment and even carried out a poor renovation job that invited rats.

The newspaper said the lawsuit labeled the 76-year-old Connery as a "rude, foul-mouthed, fat old man," which apparently led James to order a more dignified filing from Sultan.
