A longtime member of New York's Circle Repertory Company, Bishop saw many of his plays such as "Borderlines" and "Winter Signs" enjoy a stage rendition during his tenure with the group.

Despite having enjoyed a long career that included Broadway's "The Trip Back Down" and "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940," Bishop remained active until his death as he recently completed his first novel, the Times said.

The paper said that Bishop is survived by his wife, Lisa; three sons, Christopher, Matthew and Michael; and two grandchildren.
