Cubs court Dave Matthews Band revenue

CHICAGO, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Even though the Dave Matthews Band bus dumped human waste on river sightseers, the Chicago Cubs want the band to bring in some cash safe from revenue-sharing.

The National League baseball team has asked City Hall for permission to stage two concerts by the band on the weekend after the Fourth of July to raise revenue to help cover the $300 million it staked on free agents this winter, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Under Major League Baseball rules, for every dollar the Cubs earn on game days, 34 cents must be shared with other teams, while concert revenue is exempt.

The Cubs staged a similar event with Jimmy Buffett on Labor Day in 2005, and agreed to donate $150,000 to neighborhood schools, take a one-year break from concerts and forfeit one of their 30 night games the following season.

In 2004, the driver of a Matthews band bus dumped 800 pounds of smelly human waste on a steel-grated bridge, which rained on about 100 tourists on a Chicago River tour boat passing below.
