Sony BMG agrees to cease CD tampering

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Sony BMG has agreed to stop placing copyright infringement software on its CDs and will pay fines in both California and Texas because of the practice.

The software had limited the amount of times a CD's owner could copy the disc and had proven harmful to some consumers' computers.

While the company was found innocent of allegations of adding spyware software to its products, it agreed to offer all of its 450,000 California consumers a refund up to $175 if they respond it time with their grievances.

The paper said that a similar final judgment of Sony BMG will likely soon come in Texas and that legal decision could bring further actions from state and federal officials.
