For many years, Hayward was a writer for Jay Ward Productions, creators of the infamous Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, which were a cold war spoof. Hayward, also the creator of the Mountie Dudley Do-Right character, once had his work banned in Canada because the Dudley Do-Right character was considered insulting to the country.

Hayward's work also included "The Munsters," about the daily life of a family of ghouls.

Born in June 1925 in Bayonne, N.J., Hayward is survived by his wife, a sister, three children and two grandchildren.
