Film rights sold to new Peter Pan tale

LONDON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The film rights for the official sequel to "Peter Pan" have been sold to Britain's Headline Pictures, BBC Films and the United Kingdom Film Council.

The Daily Variety reported Monday that the recently published novel of Geraldine McCaughrean had been commissioned by Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, which owns the copyright to Scottish novelist and playwright J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan."

Barrie's book was originally titled "Peter Pan and Wendy," but Wendy lost billing along the way. The story is based on a mischievous boy who refuses to grow up. He spends his on-going childhood seeking adventures on the island of Neverland as a leader of his gang, the "Lost Boys."

Charles Denton, executive director of Great Ormond Street's charity arm, told Variety, "We could not be happier than to be partnering with Headline Pictures, the U.K. Film Council and BBC Films."

The sequel is titled "Peter Pan in Scarlet." Wendy, her brothers, and the Lost Boys have grown up and become adults, but Wendy dreams that Neverland is in trouble and they plot to find a way back for yet one more adventure.
