LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Actor Dennis Farina, who has made a film career in dramatic Hollywood fare, has signed onto the upcoming cinematic comedy "National Lampoon's Bagboy."

The 62-year-old actor, who has enjoyed dramatic turns in such films as "Manhunter" and "Saving Private Ryan," will join actress Brooke Shields in the comedy that follows the competitive world of grocery bagging, Daily Variety said.

Farina will reportedly take on the role of a former bagging champ who mentors an unpopular teenager in the quirky sports field.

The film will be headed by "Kingpin" director Mort Nathan, who also rewrote its script by Hans Rodionoff, and will also feature actors Richard Kind, Larry Miller and Paul Campbell.

For "Bagboy," National Lampoon is joining with Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the creators of "There's Something About Mary," via their production company, Conundrum Entertainment.

The paper said that the film marks the first production from National Lampoon since the cinematic group decided to produce and finance its own in-house comedies.
