Celebrity cooking tips influence shopping

LONDON, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Holiday cooking advice from TV personality Nigella Lawson has once again proven that many British citizens take their cooking cues from celebrities.

The Scotsman reported that after 46-year-old author and TV host revealed her secret to roast potatoes for the holidays was goose fat, sales of the culinary product increased up to 70 percent at the Sainsbury's supermarket chain in Britain.

Similar results were found among other major area supermarket chains and all appeared linked to Lawson's on-air culinary admission.

"Whenever a celebrity chef mentions an ingredient or product that hasn't been used for a while, sales go through the roof," a spokesman for the Asda supermarket chain said.

A similar trend was seen last year when celebrity chef Jamie Oliver promoted the use of nutmeg and the ensuing public rush for the spice had area stores struggling to keep the product on the shelves.

The paper said such public demands have only exasperated the current dilemma in Britain regarding an inability by area stores to maintain stock during the busy holiday season.
