BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Cartoon and TV writer Chris Hayward, who won an Emmy Award for his work on "He & She," has died in California at the age of 81.

The Los Angeles Times said Hayward, who also enjoyed a successful career developing such cartoon stars as Dudley Do-Right, died on Nov. 20 from cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif.

"His philosophy was: 'Just write sharp stuff for yourself and the audience will get it.' It was very freeing," said Allan Burns, Hayward's former writing partner.

"He was the Michelangelo of comedy writers," he added.

While he won his Emmy for the little-known CBS sitcom, Hayward was best known for his cartoon work and for helping create the quirky TV comedy, "The Munsters."

The Times said Hayward is survived by his wife, Linda, along with three children from a prior marriage, Laurel, Victoria and Tony.
