Mich. school pulls book from class

HOWELL, Mich., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A flap has developed in Michigan over the abrupt removal of a book from a high school English class.

"The Freedom Writers Diary" was pulled from the classroom at Howell High School in Howell due to content that included sex, drugs and foul language -- and because it hadn't been previously approved by the district.

Students in Catherine Capy's English class disagreed with the move, telling the Livingston County (Mich.) Daily Press & Argus they were mature enough to handle the book -- which was written by a California English teacher in a class of at-risk students.

One student said the book involved a world "less conservative than Howell," but some parents supported the district and said their kids had been disturbed by the book.
