'United 93' tops N.Y. Film Critics' list

NEW YORK, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- The New York Film Critics' Circle Monday picked the Sept. 11 drama "United 93" as the best film of the year.

The annual tabulation from of the organization's members found the film to be the best of 2006, while tabbing Martin Scorsese as the year's top director for his work on "The Departed," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Meanwhile, Forest Whitaker was named best actor and Helen Mirren tagged as best actress for their roles in "The Last King of Scotland" and "The Queen" respectively.

Supporting kudos were given to actress Jennifer Hudson of "Dreamgirls" and actor Jackie Earle Haley for "Little Children."

Top screenplay honors went to Peter Morgan for "The Queen," while Guillermo Navarro was recognized for his cinematography in "Pan's Labyrinth."

The Reporter said that the critics' group also recognized "Happy Feet" as top animated film of 2006 and "Deliver Us From Evil" as the year's best non-fiction production.

The awards are scheduled to be presented in a Jan. 7 ceremony.
