'This Magic Moment' singer gets name back

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Jay Black can use his stage name instead of his real name, David Blatt, if he pays off $214,000 in debt, a U.S. bankruptcy judge has ruled.

The lead singer in the band "Jay and the Americans," who was born in Brooklyn, lost the right to use the band's name as well as his stage name "Jay Black" last June, the New York Daily News reported. A bankruptcy trustee in federal court asserted rights to both names could be sold.

Black is best know for his 1960's hits "This Magic Moment" and "Cara Mia."

At his lawyer's office, Black told the New York Daily News he "lost everything." His gambling created more than $500,000 in debt, most of it for back taxes, he said.

But Black, 68, still can't call his new band "Jay and the Americans." A member of the original band, Sandy Yaguda, paid $100,000 for the rights to the name.
