LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles man was charged with sending letters containing a white powder to a list of celebrities and politicians.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said Chad Castagana, 39, was picked up a week ago by a federal terrorism task force and charged with mailing the alleged threats to the likes of television hosts Dave Letterman, Keith Olbermann and Jon Stewart as well as Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
Prosecutors said they traced the letters to Castagana despite a false return address. They arrested him after watching him drop a letter containing the powder into a mailbox near his home in November.
The powder in the letters turned out to be harmless, but a formal complaint charging him with sending threats via the U.S. mail will likely be filed on Monday.
