Streisand tour sets box office record

NASHVILLE, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Rumors claimed early ticket sales were slow, but Barbara Streisand's first live concerts after a six-year hiatus broke box office records in the United States.

Streisand's 20 concerts grossed nearly $92.5 million and topped house gross receipts in 14 of the 16 arenas where she sang.

At New York's Madison Square Garden and the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Streisand already held the record. The Hollywood Reporter says Tour Producer CPI lists the entertainer's performances as top three grosses in the Garden and top two at the MGM.

CPI producer Michael Cohl reminded Billboard.com he had predicted a successful tour for Streisand, dismissing negative remarks by the industry about the singer not performing up to par at the box office.

"I say 'nay' to the naysayers," he says.

CPI has had a banner year with the Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang" tour grossing about $437 million, setting a tour record for receipts.
